“Vessels” is an encapsulation of a performance practice that incorporates electronic music improvisation and sonification of my physiological signals. In this piece, I record my raw EEG signal from a dry-electrode EEG system, and use the signal to actuate a set of static sound samples. Slow impulse trains become a series of finger snaps that reveal this virtual space, while faster ones become a wet finger running along the rim of a glass, activating this resonant enclosure. The vessel is not just a metaphor, but also an encapsulation of the technical process by which these sounds are produced: the signal processing techniques I employ are the same ones used to lend a room presence to a dry studio recording. In “Vessels,” the sonic material is the static, virtual space, and the musical narrative emerges through an unfolding of cognitive states. My natural inclination was to improvise on the flute while using this sonification system, and I quickly learned to pare down my playing, and limit any overt physical expression or gross musical gestures, as the muscle artifacts produced would flood the “vessels” with unwanted noise. Through a daily practice of improvising with this system I have developed a paradoxical form of “introspective expression” that was enabled by training my body and perceptual mechanism with custom-engineered, musical biofeedback.
The thought of "Valley Flutes" and the fluffy cover had me fearing yet another New Age schlock tape to toss on the pile. Was quite happy to be wrong after giving both long-form compositions a listen. Feels more like old-school ambience with slight nods to the avant garde and psychedelia of the era. Easily my 2nd favorite come down tape from CTatsu after Prayer's "Second Species". jasonk
